How Does Baccarat Online Work?
Baccarat is not a difficult game to learn. When you play online, you’ll place your bets by selecting from the three options on the screen. Once you’re happy with your wagers, you can hit thedeal button and the cards will automatically be dealt.
After they have been revealed, the hand closest to 9 points wins. Those who bet on the winning hand can then claim their money.
Online baccarat doesn't have an actual deck to shuffle. It simulates the shuffling of the deck using a software program called a Random Number Generator (RNG).
How to Play Baccarat
The rules of baccarat are simple. Choose the hand that you believe will reach 9 points or closer using the cards dealt. There are three types of bets in baccarat; the Player, Banker, andTie.
- Aces: 1 Point
- 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 cards: the point is the numeric value shown on the card.
- 10, Jack, Queen, King: 0 points
Since the goal is to reach 9 points, the value of the hands goes by the last digit. For example, a 7 and an 8 would equal a 5 point hand in baccarat (7 + 8 = 15, 5 is the lastdigit).
If the first two cards in either hand total 8 or 9, then the game is over and the highest total wins. If the totals are both 8 or both 9 then it's a tie and neither hand wins.
For any other total the rules have to be consulted and it's always the player hand that goes first. If the player hand has a total of 6 or 7, it must stand. The only other totals it canpossibly have are 0,1,2,3,4 or 5 and for all of those totals, it must draw a card.
After the bets have been placed, you can choose to hit or stand. If you want another card in your hand, you’ll hit. If you don’t want to change your hand, you can stand. Deciding when to hitand stand can vary depending on the hand you’ve bet on. We explain this and the odds for each bet further down.
8-9 | Stands (Natural) |
6-7 | Stands |
0-5 | Draws |
If the player hand has a total of 6 or 7 it stands and for anything else, it has to draw a card.
Baccarat Gambling Game
After the player hand is finished the banker hand must take its turn and if its first 2 cards total 0,1 or 2 it must draw a card. If its two cards total 7 it must stand and if the total is 6 itwill stand, but only if the player hand did not take a card.
8-9 | Stands (Natural) |
0-2 | Draws |
6 | Stands (if player took no card) |
7 | Stands |
The only other possible totals the bank can have are 3,4,5 or 6 and the decision as to whether or not a 3rd card is drawn depends on the 3rd card that was drawn by the player hand.
When the banker hand has a total of 3 it must stand if the player's 3rd card was an 8 and it must draw if the player's 3rd card was any other card.
Types of Bets and Odds
There are three bets you can make in baccarat! The Player hand, the Banker, or a Tie.
These are the odds of winning on an infinite deck with a 5% commission.
Player:
Event | Probability | Pay |
---|---|---|
Win | 0.446147 | 1 |
Loss | 0.458428 | -1 |
Tie | 0.095426 | 0 |
Banker:
Event | Probability | Pay |
---|---|---|
Win | 0.458428 | .95 |
Loss | 0.446147 | -1 |
Tie | 0.095426 | 0 |
Tie:
How to find the total value
No total can be higher than 9. So, if a total is 10 or higher you have to subtract 10 to determine its value. For example, 8, 8 totals 16 but you subtract 10 and your total is 6. 9, 5 hasa total of 4. 8, 3 has a total of 1; and 5, 5 has a total of 0.
Who Wins?
The object of the game of Baccarat is to have a total as close to 9 as possible. So after the first two cards are dealt, if either the player or banker hand has a total of 9 then that's calleda 'natural' and that hand is the winner.
If neither hand has a total of 9 then the next best possible hand is a total of 8 (which is also called a 'natural') and that hand would be the winner. If both the player and the banker end upwith the same total then it's a tie and neither hand wins.
Now, if neither hand has an 8 or a 9 then the rules of the game have to be consulted to decide whether or not a third card is drawn. Once that's done, the values of the cards are added togetheragain and whichever hand is closest to a total of 9 is the winner. If both hands end up with the same total then it's a tie and neither hand wins.

Baccarat Betting Systems and Strategies
Once you understand the basics of the game, you can start to form your own strategy. This is based on the types of bets you can place and the odds for each.
Bet on the Player
The Player hand pays out even money if won, and doesn’t have any commission tied to it like the Banker. While the Banker hand may offer better odds for winning, you’ll get a higher payout ifsuccessful on the Player. If you bet on the Player hand and the sum is a 5 or less, you’re allowed to draw a third card.
Bet on the Banker
The Banker is the recommended bet to go for in baccarat. It offers the best odds and more chances to draw a third card compared to the other hands. Since the odds are so good, most baccaratgames will use a 5% commission rule on this hand.
The Banker can draw a third card under the following circumstances:
- The Player draws a 6 or 7, and the Banker is at 6.
- The Player has a 4, 5, 6, or 7 and the Banker is at 5.
- The Player has less than 8 points and the Banker has 3.
- The Banker has 4 points and the Player has a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, or face card.
If the Banker has less than 2 points, a third card will be drawn regardless of what the player is holding.

Bet on a Tie
Betting on the Tie can seem like a good idea because the payout is the highest of all three bets if you win. However, the house edge attached is 15%. A lot of baccarat strategies use the ruleof never betting on a tie. The house edge is too high and the odds are not the best.
If you want to bet on a tie you would place your bet in the area marked 'tie' and if you win you'll be paid off at 8-to-1, or $8 for every $1 you bet (at most casinos).
The big payoff sounds nice but actually this is a terrible bet because the casino advantage is nearly 15%. That's why we advise that you don't make this bet.
Bet Advantages
If you want to bet on the player hand just put your money in the area marked 'player' and if you win you'll be paid off at even-money, or $1 for every $1 you bet. The casino advantage onthe player bet is 1.36%.
If you want to bet on the banker hand you would place your bet in the area marked 'banker' and if you win, you'll also be paid off at even-money, but you'll have to pay a 5% commission on theamount you win. So, if you won $10 on your bet, you would owe a 50¢ commission to the house.
What is the Commission?
The 5% commission is only required if you win and not if you lose. The dealer will keep track of the amount you owe by putting an equal amount in a small area on the table that corresponds toyour seat number at the table.
After adjusting for that 5% commission the casino advantage on the banker bet is 1.17%.

Steve interviews gaming writer Michael Shackleford, also known as the Wizard of Odds, to learn all about baccarat. They discuss how to play the game; the casino's mathematical advantage on thevarious bets that are offered; the best strategies for playing; and whether or not the game can be beaten in the long run.
How to Win in Baccarat
All right, now that you know how to play baccarat we come to the important question which is - how do you win?
If you bet on player you'll only be giving the casino a 1.36% edge. If you bet on banker you'll be giving the casino an even more modest edge of just 1.17%. While both of these are pretty lowedges to give the casino you're still stuck with the fact that the casino will always have an edge over you and in the long run the game of baccarat is unbeatable.
So, if that's the case then how do you win?
Well, the answer to that is very simple - You have to get lucky! And that's the only way you can win at baccarat.
Of course, this is easier said than done, but fortunately, in the game of baccarat, you have the option of making two bets that require no skill and both offer the casino a very low edge.Compare them to roulette - where the house has a 5.26% advantage on a double-zero wheel and slot machines - where the edge is about 8% to 10%!
When you gamble in a casino you have to play the games that have the lowest casino edge in order to have the best chance of winning. With that in mind you can see that baccarat is not that bada game to play for the recreational gambler.

Baccarat Online Variants
Baccarat has different ways it can be played online. In the United States, a few of the most common variations include Baccarat Squeeze and Mini Baccarat. While new games can be exciting totry, these variations tend to have a higher house edge than the traditional version. This is why it’s recommended to stick to the classic baccarat version over new variations.
Baccarat Squeeze
Baccarat Squeeze is by Evolution Gaming and part of the live casino platform. It’s very similar to the original baccarat except for the cards being dealt face down. This adds a level ofexcitement to the game for players.
Mini Baccarat
Mini Baccarat is one of the more popular variations of baccarat in the United States. Fewer people can play at a mini-baccarat table and the stakes are much lower than the othervariations.
Betting Systems
Baccarat is a game of luck, so some use betting systems to determine their bets. You can have some element of strategy if you're playing with a shoe of limited decks.
Betting on a Streak
Now let's take a quick look at one of the most common systems for betting on Baccarat. One thing that many Baccarat players seem to have in common is a belief in streaks and the casinosaccommodate these players by providing scorecards at the table that can be used to track the results of each hand. Many players like to bet on whatever won the last hand in the belief that itwill continue to come in and they hope for a long streak.
The thinking for these players is that, since Baccarat is purely a guessing game ,it's just like guessing the outcome of a coin toss. Chances are that a coin won't alternately come upheads, tails, heads, tails, heads, tails but rather that there will be streaks where the same result will come in for a while.
So, is this a good system? Well, actually, it's no better and no worse than any other system because no matter what you do you'll still have the same casino edge going against you on every betyou make: 1.36% on the player and 1.17% on the banker.
The one good thing about a system like this though is that you don't have to sit there and guess what you want to play each time. Instead, you go into the game knowing how you're going to playand you don't have to blame yourself if your guess is wrong, instead you get to blame it on your system!

Who Plays Baccarat?
When you think of Baccarat you probably think of a game that's played by the casino's wealthiest players who sit at a private table and can afford to bet tens of thousands of dollars on theflip of a card and you know what? You're right!
The game of Baccarat has always had a reputation as being for the richest gamblers and that usually scared off the average player, but nowadays more and more people are discovering thatBaccarat is really a good game for the small stakes player because 1.-it has a relatively small advantage for the casino and 2.-it's very simple to play.
Why is the Game Named Baccarat?
Actually the name Baccarat comes from the Italian word for zero and as you'll see there are lots of zeros in this game. When you add the cards together all of the 10's and all of the face cardsare counted as zeros, while all of the other cards from ace though 9 are counted at their face value.
Rules for Dealing the Third Card
If the Bank has 3 and
- Player's third card is 8 - BANK STANDS
- Player's third card is 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9,10 - BANK DRAWS
When the banker hand has a total of 4 it must stand if the player's 3rd card was a 1,8,9, or 10 and it must draw if the player's 3rd card was any other card.
If the Bank 4 and
- Player's third card is 1,8,9,10 - BANK STANDS
- Player's third card is 2,3,4,5,6,7 - BANK DRAWS
When the banker hand has a total of 5 it must stand if the player's 3rd card was a 4,5,6 or 7 and it must draw if the player's 3rd card was any other card.
If the Bank has 5 and
- Player's third card is 4,5,6,7 - BANK STANDS
- Player's third card is 1,2,3,8,9,10 - BANK DRAWS
When the banker hand has a total of 6 it must stand if the player's 3rd card was a 6 or 7 and it must draw if the player's 3rd card was any other card.
If the Bank has 6 and
- Player's third card is 6 or 7 - BANK STANDS
- Player's third card is 1,2,3,4,5,8,9,10 - BANK DRAWS
There you have it - those are the rules of Baccarat concerning the draw of a third card. As you saw they were a little complicated, but remember that you don't have to memorize the rulesyourself because the dealer will know them and play each hand by those rules, but you can always ask for a copy of the rules at the table to follow along.
Example scenarios
Now let's try some sample hands: The player hand has queen,9 for a total of 9 and the banker hand has 4,4 for a total of 8. Which hand wins? Both hands are naturals, but the player hand totalof 9 is higher than the banker hand total of 8, so the player hand is the winner.
If the player hand has 4,2 for a total of 6 and the banker hand has ace, jack which totals 1, what happens? The player hand must stand on its 6 and the banker hand must always draw when it hasa total of 0,1 or 2. Let's say the bank draws a 7 and wins 8 to 6.
What happens when the player hand has king, 5 and the bank hand has 2, 4? The player hand must draw and let's say it gets a 7 for a total of 2. The banker hand has a total of 6 and if it couldstand on that total it would win because its 6 is higher than the 2 held by the player. Of course, if you were betting on banker that's exactly what you would want to happen but, unfortunatelyfor you, the rules require the bank hand to draw another card whenever its first two cards total 6 and the third card drawn by the player is a 7. So now, instead of having a winning hand youhave to hope that the card you draw isn't a 5, which would give you a total of 1 making you a loser.
You also wouldn't want to draw a 6 because that would give you a total of 2 which would give you a tie. In this case let's say that the bank hand goes on to draw an 8 which gives it a total of3 and it wins 4 to 2.
If the player hand has 3, ace for a total of 4 and the banker hand has 8, 7 for a total of 5, what happens? The player hand must draw and say it gets a 9 for a total of 3. Once again, thebanker hand would like to stand on its total because it would win, but the rules have to be consulted first and in this case when the banker's first 2 cards total 5 and the player's third carddrawn is a 9 the banker hand must stand, so the banker hand wins 5 to 3.
Finally, let's say the player hand has 4,3 for a total of 7 and the banker hand has 6,10 for a total of 6. The player hand must always stand on totals of 6 or 7 and the banker hand must alsostand on its total of 6 because the player hand didn't take a third card. The player hand wins this one 7 to 6.
Let’s get one thing straight – there is not one single surefire Baccarat strategy guaranteeing you wins. Anyone who claims they have cracked the Baccarat code is either a Trump supporter who yells at kids to get off their lawn or a self-righteous and self-proclaimed “expert” lacking the bankroll to back up him boasting his uncanny skill and technique. And although there’s not really one foolproof strategy per se, considering how much based on the chance the game is, there are some rules you can follow to ensure a pleasant time at the Baccarat table.
How to Play Baccarat – The Rules In a Nutshell
First and foremost – learn the mechanics of the game. Make sure you know the rules, how the cards are dealt and what their value is. It can be boring learning all the intricacies like when the player stands and when the banker hits but if you’re betting your money, you need to have a complete understanding of what’s going on.
Despite the fancy suited high-rollers we’ve come to associate with Baccarat, it doesn’t take the intellectual prowess and deductive reasoning of a British Secret Service agent to ace it. In fact, this is probably the most straightforward game you can play at a casino. Despite all the prestige surrounding the game, it’s really nothing more than a coin toss, so once you’re familiar with the terms and bets, you’re all good to go. To prep you up for a night at a glitzy land-based casino or a game at an online live table, here’s a crash course on how to play Baccarat.
Baccarat is played at large kidney-shaped tables that can sit 12 players and two dealers, plus a caller. In front of every player, there are two fields – Player and Banker. Each player places their bet before the cards are dealt and chooses whether their wager goes to the Player hand or the Banker hand. There is also a third option – Tie if the Player and Banker’s hands have equal value. The version of Baccarat played at American casinos is called Punto Banco which stands for Player and Banker. After all players have placed their bets, the Player and the Banker are each dealt two cards. The hand that wins is the one that’s closer to a total of 9. So, if the Player hand is 8 and the Banker hand is a 3, the winning one is the Player and all punters at the table who have placed bets on the Player hand, win. If the hands are equal, it’s a loss for everyone who has bet on Player / Banker and a win for all that have bet on a Tie.

The Good, the Bad and the Player – Baccarat Bets to Make and Avoid
The first step towards winning is to avoid the Tie bet. Not that we don’t like it or anything but if you’re in it to win it, then wagering your money on a bet with a 14-percent house edge is not exactly a surefire winning strategy. Next, you need to know the odds – although it seems pretty straightforward having only two options to bet – either Player or Banker, there are slightly different odds for the two as follows:
- Banker – 45.843%
- Player – 44.615%
- Tie – 9.543%
*There’s also a commission on the Banker bet so make sure you’re familiar with these before placing a wager.
The Banker Bet
With its higher odds, the Banker bet seems like the most reasonable choice when designing a Baccarat winning strategy. Experts will advise you to bet your money on it because it has been estimated that it will win more than 50% of the time – one of the reasons casinos add the 5% commission on it. Despite this being added, it’s still a preferred choice for many players – both newbies and seasoned pros who swear by it. Experts will also recommend that you keep betting on Banker until it loses as it has a better chance for winning streaks and that you wait for at least one bet after a Banker loss before switching to Player.
A good thing to always keep in mind is that hot/cold tables and winning/losing streaks are pure myths born by the gambler’s fallacy that in even odds bets after many consecutive outcomes of the same results, the opposite one is just bound to happen. There’s absolutely no mathematical or any other proof of such co-dependency so we advise that you don’t employ such practices.

The Player Bet
Although the Banker bet is typically assumed as the better option, it’s a bit different when you’re using a strategy. Considering the commission on the Banker bet, it will be less lucrative when you’re using progressions. Let’s say, you’re playing Martingale – you are doubling your bet after every loss. After four consecutive losses at a 10-unit wager, you’ve lost 150 units (10 + 20 + 40 + 80).
You bet on Banker again and this time you wager 160. Finally, you win and the total payout is 304 units. That’s the 160 stake plus the 160 win, minus the 5% commission. The total amount wagered was 310 (10 + 20 + 40 + 80 + 160) which means that even though you’ve won, you haven’t covered your losses and due to the negative progression and the bet commission, your net loss is 6 units. A similar streak of losses while betting the Player hand would have given the expected 1 unit of profit, that is 10. Despite its lower odds, it’s the better option when playing with systems.
The Tie Bet
Baccarat is known as the casino game with the lowest house edge, however, the Tie bet can definitely tarnish its reputation. The Banker is recommended for its low edge of 1.06%, the Player is also a good option with a house edge of 1.26% and then there’s the Tie bet – standing at the staggering 14.4% house edge, defying logic and critical thinking. Naturally, it’s not a good call to place your money on a bet that has less than 10% odds and the possibility of paying back only 14 units per very 100 units wagered. That’s why the most logical thing would be to avoid it and play as if it doesn’t exist. A tie is a push, so your wager will just wait for the next round. If you’re following a streak and you get a Tie, simply don’t count it and keep playing accordingly.

Using Betting Systems in Baccarat – It’s Not Stupid if it Works
Some practices used in other table and card games can also be applied to Baccarat. Both simple strategies like the D’Alembert and more sophisticated ones like the Labouchere system can serve your purpose of beating the odds at Baccarat. Positive progression systems like the Parlay and Paroli or negative progressions are also applied by players. To find out how you can use popular betting systems like the Fibonacci progression or the 1-3-2-6 system, read more details about Baccarat betting systems on our dedicated page.
Positive Progressions
Using a positive progression system means that you increase your bet every time you win and reduce it after a loss. Positive progressions are considered to be less damaging to your bankroll than negative progression betting systems. They are supposed to help you maximize your winnings if you go on a lucky winning streak and keep your losses to a minimum if you end up having consecutive losses. In theory, they do make sense and it is possible to win more money if you get a series of winning outcomes and soften the blow to your wallet in case of several consecutive losses. Positive progressions do not influence your chances of winning or losing a bet and are generally no risk at all.
Negative Progression Systems
Negative progressions are just the opposite of positive progression systems and can actually be harmful to your bankroll. In essence, they postulate that you should increase your wager after every loss and reduce it after a winning bet. At first glance, they seem logical and it’s easy to see why some gamblers will be tempted to try them. The theory behind them is that when you increase your bet, eventually your win will be big enough to cover your losses.
A closer look at how they work will reveal all the problems about such betting practice. There’s a very real risk that you will eventually run out of money, especially if you’re doubling your bet. Besides, there’s the bet limit of the house you need to consider – even if you have enough money to keep betting, the cap of the bet amount will prevent you from placing a wager big enough to cover your losses. Unless you’re very experienced and know exactly what you’re doing, such systems can be a recipe for disaster.
Flat Betting Strategy
Unlike positive and negative progression systems where you have to alter the amount of your bet, a flat betting strategy for Baccarat means that you will be repeatedly placing the exact same wager in successive rounds of play, regardless of whether you lose or win. This approach is considered advantageous due to the lower risk in case of a losing streak. But how can you win more using a flat betting strategy? The best way to profit from the flat betting strategy is to determine correctly which hand will win, Banker or Player, with the accuracy higher than 50 percent. Using the flat betting strategy means that you will place the same amount of bet on every hand. While this is an effective way of minimizing the risk, it doesn’t guarantee big wins. It’s useful if you’re still getting used to the game and not very certain of the rules.
What are the benefits of using the flat betting system instead of the negative or positive progressions?
- Flat betting offers higher chances of actually making a profit.Since you don’t double or increase your bet in flat betting, there’s a smaller risk of overspending. Not adding more money to your wager reduces the risks of bigger losses and presents a better chance of making a profit.
- You can bet more. Flat betting gives you the option for more bets at a lesser value since you don’t double the wager neither after a win, nor after a loss, the way you would in progression systems. You can bet more money because you won’t make big losses due to doubled bets.
- You can use it if you’re not very well versed in the rules. Flat betting is suitable for beginners because of its simplicity and lower risk. You don’t need to make calculations and you can apply it even if you’re not familiar with the rules like drawing additional cards.
If you’re interested in utilizing a betting system, flat betting is the only way to do it without the risk of losing more money than you can afford. Experts advise against using negative progressions and are sceptical about positive progressions as well, so it’s not a good idea to chase after other strategies if you can gain an advantage over the game by using the flat betting system. It doesn’t guarantee a sure win but it is an effective way to increase your odds if you manage to predict the outcome of the round. Even if you don’t, you don’t risk losing a lot of money.
Round | Win/Loss | Bet | Result |
---|---|---|---|
1 | win | $1 | + $1 |
2 | win | $1 | + $2 |

Card Counting in Baccarat – Close to Impossible but Still an Option
Card counting has gained enormous popularity at Blackjack ever since Edward E. Thorp published his 1964 bestseller Beat the Dealer. It’s a method that has proven to be lucrative for players who have used it successfully to beat blackjack. But of course, it’s not just the players that caught on to it – the casinos are well aware of it and now blackjack tables are the most closely watched ones, with suspected card counters often being barred from betting or asked to leave the premises. But gamblers won’t let their practice go to waste so they turn to the next best thing where they can continue to hone their skills – Baccarat.
Yes, Baccarat card counting is a thing and might as well be the reason why Baccarat is likely to replace blackjack as the most popular casino game. Although theoretically, you can beat Baccarat by counting cards, the edge you get will be so small that it might not actually be worth your time, considering how much more complicated than card counting at a game of 21 it is. Still, if you have the time and dedication to try and learn it, we have the complete Baccarat card counting guide to help you.
Money Management Is Crucial
If you decide to use progression systems, you need to exercise strict control over your budget. Any system that requires you to increase or double your bet is a pitfall that you’ll have hard time getting out of. Whatever systems you’re using to play online baccarat at the best online casinos, be it the Paroli, Martingale, Parlay or any other, never spend more money than you set out to. Baccarat is a chance-based game, you can never predict with certainty whether you will have a winning or a losing streak. Don’t go chasing your losses and remember the golden rule – quit while you’re ahead.

- Neteller

Plan your budget – decide on your wager and put a limit on the total sum you’re willing to bet. If you decide to make your wager $10, allow yourself a $200 bankroll and if you lose it all, simply walk away. Take time until the next session. It’s nice to leave the table a winner, but gambling is inherently unpredictable. The worst strategy would be to start chasing your losses or fall for some of the erroneous motivators behind gambling like:
- near misses: being very close to winning but not actually winning and continuing to wager with the assumption that the next round is due to be a win.
- the illusion of control: being able to roll the dice, spin the ball at roulette, or squeeze the cards in baccarat will give you a false sensation of exercising control over a game purely based on luck.
- the gambler’s fallacy: the wrong and unsupported conviction that after a series of the same result or a losing streak, the next one will be lucky and with the winnings, you’ll be able to even out.
Having Fun and Staying in Control Is the Best Strategy
All of these are misconceptions that are actually the first signs of compulsive gambling. We have an innate aversion to loss but we have to accept that in a tight game like baccarat, the chance is the deciding factor. Stop playing when you’ve spent your budget, regardless of whether you’re winning or losing and give yourself some time before you go back to playing. If you’re winning, split your win in half and use only that to keep playing. Even if you lose it, you still walk away with a profit. Remember that gambling is an entertaining activity – enjoy the fun and social aspects of it and stay in control of your bankroll. Now, that’s a strategy that always works.
